Sharing Made Secure for Smoother Installs 🔧

Imagine managing a complex security system – multiple users, varying needs, and the constant pressure to ensure ironclad security. This case study explores Site Sharing, a feature designed to streamline collaboration between Monitoring Managers and Camera Installers, all while prioritising robust data security. Let's delve into how Site Sharing empowers secure and efficient workflows.

Understanding the users

Problem:

  • Multiple User Roles: Calipsa caters to various users within a single security company account (e.g., Monitoring Managers and Camera Installers). Each role requires specific privileges to fulfil their tasks.

  • Limited Installer Access: Camera Installers need access to Calipsa during on-site installations but shouldn't have full platform privileges for security reasons.

  • Manual Workarounds: The current workflow might involve back-and-forth information or credentials sharing, leading to inefficiencies and potential security breaches.

Solution: Site Sharing

Site Sharing grants restricted access to specific Calipsa features for Camera Installers based on their role. This ensures they can efficiently complete installation tasks while minimising data exposure.

User Research:

We conducted interviews and surveys with Monitoring Managers and Camera Installers to understand their needs and challenges. Key findings included:

  • Monitoring Managers: Desire a secure way to grant controlled access to installers for specific sites.

  • Camera Installers: Need access to relevant camera information for efficient installations.

Solutions

Point 1: Streamlining User Management

Confusing user role definitions during account setup were a pain point for both Calipsa's internal team and client admins. To address this, we redesigned the user creation screen. Descriptions and privilege details for each user role are now displayed directly within the UI. This single source of truth ensures accurate role selection and eliminates confusion.

Point 2: Clear and Dynamic Permission Descriptions

Calipsa's permission system, with its mix of read/write and view/unview options, could be cumbersome. We tackled this by creating clear and dynamic descriptions. These descriptions update based on toggle states (on/off), giving users a precise understanding of permissions at a glance. This simplifies permission assignment and ensures effective role-based access control.

Point 3: White Labeling

User feedback revealed the need for white-labeling the Site Sharing feature. This allows Calipsa's clients to present the feature under their own branding, enhancing the user experience for their end customers. Interestingly, this discovery later led to the development of "Alarm notification via email," a new revenue stream for Calipsa.
